Environment design: idea creation

When considering my idea, I decide i should go for horror or sci-fi, as a lot of my previous work has been more historical or fantasy. but I still wanted to make the project very enjoyable to me, just outside of my usual.

When considering horror the horrors I like most are comedy horrors, like ‘the guy who doesn’t like musicals’ and ‘What we do in the shadows’.

I had more I liked in sci-fi as it is quite fantasy adjacent but just more Techy and spacey.

My first idea was a sort of ghibli, treasure planet-esque environment with a robot workshop under the theme Sci-fi Beauty. But, unfortunately I ended up getting abandoned by my family and in the process, the USB stick I had most of the project on got bent out of repair. I then luckily had very kind friends who helped me sort my life out and gave me places to stay, and basically kept me alive, so I was very much seeing the beauty in friendship and support of eachother which inspired the very quick back up idea. Heres the stuff I had before everything died.

So for future context this next idea was somewhat made under the pretense of; I have this work in sci-fi beauty, I have these asset packs downloaded, I am homeless and having a mental breakdown with 2 weeks left to finish this assignment but my incredibly kind friends are helping me and allowing me to be pretty much reliant on them. So there was some madness, admittedly but I will try and explain my brain’s reasoning.

Anyway, back on track.

For sci-fi beauty I wanted to constrate on the beauty in friendship, resourcefulness, connection and nature.

A sci-fi short film I really enjoyed, Playground by Bertie gilbert and Sammy Paul is mostly set in a forest, and it has a very colourful unique aethetic.

In the making of video the directors cite using children’s drawings and the work of their friend and fellow director PJ Liguori (KickThePJ) as inspiration.

so from there I stuck some things and did some sketches in my sketchbook

I stucked colourful yarn from a leftover cortchet project, tissue paper from packaging, then also did some weird techniques like trying differnet brush strokes and also splashing water on a bit of the page then tracing over the splash in marker and doing that several times for layered colours.

I then collected images to have a sort of visual library in my brain as I am a very visual thinker.

When it came to art style I decided to go for a more stylized and illustrative approach and sought out appropriate assets for that, as I wnated to have some difference from my inspirations which are all real things / live action but it still lends itself to the childish feel.
